Tamsulosin and Finasteride Tamsulosin medication belongs to a class of drugs called alpha-blockers. It works by relaxing the muscles in the prostate and bladder neck, making it easier to urinate. Tamsulosin is primarily prescribed to treat symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland that can cause urinary problems such as difficulty urinating, weak stream, and frequent urination, especially at night. Finasteride belongs to a class of medications known as 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors. It works by inhibiting the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone that contributes to prostate growth. Finasteride is primarily used to treat BPH and male pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia). In BPH, it helps to shrink the prostate gland, thereby improving urinary symptoms. In male pattern baldness, it can help to slow down hair loss and stimulate hair regrowth.
